Pride and Prejudice

At the first assembly, Bingley charms everyone while his proud friend Darcy offends nearly as fast, dismissing Elizabeth within her own hearing as "not pretty enough to interest me." She does not forgive it. What follows is a contest of judgments: dances that turn into duels of words, first impressions weighed and reweighed, a charming officer named Wickham whose story casts Darcy in a darker light still. Through it all Elizabeth trusts her own reading of people, and the novel takes its patient time showing her how much reading she has left to do.

Around this runs a whole social world rendered with wicked precision: the obsequious Mr. Collins reciting his patroness's praises, Charlotte Lucas marrying for a comfortable home and saying plainly she never was romantic. Lady Catherine is accustomed to flattery and quite unprepared to be teased. Austen catches each of them in their own voice, and lets them convict themselves.

Early on, Elizabeth crosses muddy fields on foot, arriving with a face glowing from the exercise and a petticoat six inches deep in it — small, exact moments that make a drawing-room world feel entirely alive. Beneath the wit sits a quieter question, about pride and its cost, and about what it takes to see another person clearly. The door stands open here for anyone who has ever been sure they had someone figured out.
