Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The river does most of the talking. Long stretches of the book drift the way the current does — dawn unfolding slowly, the two of them fishing and swimming and lying under the stars — before a wrecked steamboat, a blood feud between two proud families, or a pair of traveling con men calling themselves a duke and a lost king come crashing into the quiet. Told entirely in Huck's own rough, funny, unschooled voice, it moves between broad comedy and something much tenderer without ever announcing the shift.

Underneath the runaways and disguises runs a harder current: a boy raised to believe helping Jim is a sin, arguing with his own conscience about whether to turn his friend in. Jim, for his part, becomes the book's moral heart — "You're the best friend Jim has ever had," he tells Huck, in a moment sharpened by what Huck is privately turning over.

It's a voice that trusts you to laugh and notice at the same time. Where his conscience finally lands, and what it costs him, is the door this book leaves open.
